SYNOPSIS (with spoilers)

The movie opens on teenage RILEY running down a residential street, hiding from a patrol car, then sneaking into a home and hiding in the basement. She spends days there, sneaking food and water. She escapes when she is discovered. OFFICERS BURTON and PEREZ answer the police call, but don’t follow up. Riley spends the night in a shelter and gets her backpack stolen. 

 

She hides in another house (SHERYL and KURT’s home) where she sees Kurt fondling himself on his 8 year-old daughter EMMA’s bed. Horrified, Riley secretly moves the couple’s nanny cam into Emma’s room and catches an unaware Kurt in the act. Kurt finds Riley, chases her out of the house, and calls the police. Sheryl and Kurt report that a valuable first edition worth $100k is missing; however, when Officers Perez and Burton watch the nanny cam footage with a horrified Sheryl, they see Kurt in Emma’s room and arrest him on the spot.

 

The following day, Riley, still on the run, gets caught hiding in an OLD MAN's backyard shed and is arrested by OFFICER WILLIAMS. At the police station, Sheryl, who’s there to assist the police with Kurt’s case, sees Riley getting booked for trespassing. Riley’s dad, who turns out to be Officer Burton, makes a scene at the station and takes Riley. At home, Burton and MRS. BURTON lock Riley in the basement where she endures a MINISTER’s ‘exorcism' and electro-shock ‘therapy.’ 

 

Near her breaking point, Riley fights back. She trips Burton on the basement stairs, escapes, and goes to Sheryl and Emma’s house where Sheryl thanks her for being Emma's "guardian angel". Burton finds her there, threatens Sheryl with his gun before a couple of cop colleagues arrive. In the tense standoff, Riley refuses to go with the armed Burton and tells the other officers about the electrocution. Burton runs off and is soon arrested with Mrs. Burton. 

 

In the following days, Sheryl applies to foster Riley, and finds out that Riley not only moved the nanny cam but also purposely hid the $100k first edition to ensure Kurt would call the police. The last scene shows Sheryl happily watching Riley and Emma play together in her living room.
